Janet’s Planet at Maple Elementary

The Ogle Center at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany (Indiana) is presenting free performances for local students next week of Janet’s Planet as part of its Duke Energy Children & Family Series. Students will have the opportunity to explore the wonders of the solar system by traveling at the “speed of thought” in this interactive performance that takes young audiences on a virtual tour across the universe.

As part of this experience, Maple Elementary was selected to participate in “A Conversation with Astronaut Wendy Lawrence” on Thursday, November 9th. The 45-minute online interactive Zoom session (similar to Skype) is where Janet Ivey, creator of Janet’s Planet, introduced 4-time shuttle astronaut Wendy Lawrence. Wendy addressed the students for about 30 minutes followed by a 10-15 minute question/answer session moderated by Janet and her team.

Wendy Lawrence is a retired United States Navy Captain, former helicopter pilot, an engineer, and a former NASA astronaut. She was the first female graduate of the United States Naval Academy to fly into space and she also visited the Russian Space Station Mir. She was a mission specialist on the STS-114, the first Space Shuttle flight after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

Thank you to the Duke Energy Foundation for sponsoring this wonderful educational experience!
